College Republicans Chairman Election
« More Populist Drivel From the Democrats | Main | Fletcher's Job Approval Numbers Jump to 47% »I loved being in the College Republicans. First and foremost because it was the lone bastion of conservatism in a see of collegiate liberalism. Secondly, the energy and idealism that young people bring to conservatism is wonderfully invigorating. Something that the "grown ups" in the party leadership lost somewhere along the way. Finally, the camaraderie that was shared will be something I always remember.
I was first introduced to the College Republicans my freshman year at the University of Maryland. It was my first exposure to conservatism and politics and I was immediately hooked. The next year, I came back to go to school at the University of Louisville and tried to lookup the CRs.
Unfortunately, they had disbanded. So I took up the reigns and re-started the College Republicans on campus. The U of L CR's flourished under my tenure as chairman. I think we consistently had 10-20 active members throughout those years. As far as I know it has been a thriving organization at U of L ever since. I was even fortunate enough during my time in school to serve as the state chairman of the College Republicans. It was really cool to go around to the various schools in the state and get a chance to taste the culture of each school. It was an experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. It also made me realize how diverse our state is.
Well, it looks like the state federation of CR's is going through an election cycle for state chairman. The candidates for chairman are Morgan Wilkins and Michael Wray. It appears that Morgan has issued two challenges for debate and Michael has yet to respond to either one.
Update - It appears that Michael has agreed to debate and it will be done online at Blue Grass, Red State. I'm interested in watching (I guess reading) it. Personally , I think they should do a live debate at the state convention. That would be fun.
I have decided to include the challenge letters to help spread the word. I would love to see the debate. An opportunity to see what vision the young whipper snappers have for the future direction of the CRs. (Heck I would be even willing to serve as an impartial moderator for such a debate if offered.)
I'll keep you updated as I found out more information!
Debate Series Challenge
Michael:
I enjoyed meeting and talking with many College Republicans from aroundKentucky at the Lincoln Day Dinner last night. As we witnessed, there is alot of healthy competition amongst Republicans from throughout theCommonwealth. In the spirit of continued discussion and debate, I amwriting to you today to challenge you to a series of debates in the comingmonths. As conservatives, we understand better than anyone else thatcompetition spawns the best product, and surely this election does not strayfrom that tenet.
I have spoken with several chapter chairmen about a time and location tohost the first debate, and if you accept this challenge, then I would liketo work with you in determining times and locations that are mutuallybeneficial. I look forward to hearing back from you.
Second Debate Challenge
Michael,
I am writing to you again because it has been nearly a week since Ichallenged you to a series of debates.
Yet, I have not heard one word from you.
I am not the only College Republican that is curious to hear your response.Several College Republicans from across Kentucky have come to me asking if Iknow why you have not yet responded to the challenge. Some of those CRsasking are your own supporters.
No one can argue that a debate is a healthy and fair way to provide KY CRswith the opportunity to get to know us, ask questions, and better decide forthemselves which candidate they prefer.
Therefore, once again, I am challenging you to a series of debates in thecoming months. And, like I said before, if you accept this challenge I wouldlove to work together with you on determining a time and place that ismutually beneficial to host the first debate.
I would appreciate hearing back from you.
Hey Michael, take her up on the debate challenge. If for nothing else than an opportunity for a learning experience.
