Boswel to Challenge Ron Lewis for 2nd District
It looks like my Congressman has a challenger next year. Democratic State Senator David Boswel from Ownesboro has thrown his hat in the ring for the 2nd Congressional seat. I am bit surprised such a strong Democratic candidate is running. Just two years ago Mike Weaver, another Democratic State Senator, got pole axed by 10 points. And that was in a a year that Democrats had a tidal wave of momentum. I guess hope runs eternal.
This year Boswell is hoping to capitalize on the Democratic wave that began in 2006, when the party regained control of Congress.
He acknowledged that beating an entrenched Republican "isn't easy to do under normal circumstances." But he said he believes the fact that Lewis has been a strong supporter of President Bush's agenda makes him vulnerable.
Good luck with that! The biggest problem he is going to face is the presidential election. If ultra liberal Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee, Boswel is going to have a difficult decision. If Boswell embraces Obama, Lewis will be able to justly paint Boswel as a Democratic liberal. If Boswell tries to distance himself from his own party's nominee he will implicitly be endorsing the Republican presidential candidate. It will be difficult for Bowsell to align himself with the national Republicans and attack Lewis because of his support for Bush.
At this point, I like Lewis's chances to be re-elected.
