It looks like the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is trying to breathe life into Boswell's faltering campaign.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has reserved $840,000 in television air time in Kentucky's second district and has begun running an ad that hammers Republican state Sen. Brett Guthrie on free trade issues.
The only problem with the ad is that it lies about Guthrie. The ad states that Guthrie's company, Trace Die Cast, shipped jobs to Mexico. The only problem is it didn't happen. It is a complete fabrication. All of Trace Die Cast's employees live and work in America.
The ad then piles on top of the sleazy false allegations a good pile of stupidity. It claims that Boswell will fight to create jobs by opposing NAFTA. Any economist worth his salt will tell you that free trade creates jobs for all countries which participate. In addition to creating jobs, free trade lowers the price of goods in the market. Making life more affordable for everyone. The reality is that NAFTA has been good for the United States, Canada, and Mexico. All that Boswell's protectionism will do besides ruin relationships with our neighbors is drive up the cost of goods and destroy jobs by artificially inflating the cost of labor.
The ad then doubles down on the insanity by claiming that Boswell will vote to raise the minimum wage. I can't imagine a better way to help the economy than to artificially inflate the cost of wages. We have already seen how the minimum wage increase has destroyed jobs for teenagers. The fact of the matter is that teen unemployment is up 3.5 percent since the adoption of the new minimum wage. A rate which is considerably more than the 1.1 percent unemployment increase seen across all age groups during the same period.
At the end of the day, this add is nothing but populist dogma that doesn't have any basis in the real world. They tell us that Guthrie will destroy jobs, but then present actions which will inarguably kill jobs. It's a good thing Guthrie has out raised Boswell. He is going to need it to fight off these scurrilous attacks by the Democrats.
