Open Letter To Senator McConnell

Dear Senator McConnell,

Congratulations on your win last night. It was joyous to see your victory in a tide of Democratic success. Your victory now makes you the top Republican in the country. Your ascent to the head of the GOP provides you with an amazing opportunity. You can help rebuild the national Republican party like you did the Republican party in Kentucky. You have a chance to rebuild the Republican brand.

Here are some suggestions to help you in the process:

1) Let liberalism reign. Now is the time to return to our roots as Republicans and be the party of smaller government, lower taxes, and individual freedom. You must do that by speaking out against the Democrats on policy issues, but you should allow their tax plans, trade ideas, and environmental ideas pass. Why would I suggest this? First off, we can not be defined as the party of obstruction. We need to let some of their ideas through. Why not make it things that can be easily reversed in a future Republican administration?

2) But that means you don't have to let everything they want to pass. You must be willing to go to the mat for some core issues. These are the ideas that we must never let pass because they would be difficult to reverse in the future, or they are topics with which we can win popular support. What issues do I have in mind?
  • Socialized Health Care. This can not be allowed to pass. There is no way back from this step. A step that would be disastrous not only to health care, but to the entire bio-medical field that is just now beginning to bloom.
  • Freedom Issues. We must stand up and fight against the Fairness Doctrine. We must stand up and fight Card Check. We must stand up and fight against attacks on gun manufacturers. These are all areas were we can win popular support and use it to kill bad legislation.
3) Delay, delay, and delay some more when it comes to judges. One of the more egregious acts by Democrats in the last 8 years was their refusal to confirm judicial appointments of Bush. I think you should repay the favor.

4) Begin redeveloping the Republican brand. You need to identify the core principles that define the Republican party and stick to them. The reason we have lost our majority is because we abandoned the principles that got us elected in the first place. If we as a party stick to these principles we will regain our majority sooner rather than later. Liberalism will fail. It always has and always will. There is no way it can succeed. It is based upon principles that are unbound by reality. They will not generate the results they desire. When their failures become evident to the electorate, we can be in place to seize the reins of power and lead the country into new age of American prosperity.

Good luck with the task ahead of you.

Sincerely,

Brian Schenkenfelder
