Good News And Bad News On KY State Budget

Yesterday, House Appropriates and Revenue Committee Chairman Rick Rand said tax increases next year are unlikely.
House Appropriations and Revenue Committee Chairman Rick Rand said all 100 House seats and 19 of 38 Senate seats will be up for election next year, making tax increases of any kind unlikely.

“Those are the political realities,” said Rand, a Democratic from Bedford. “At a time when businesses and families are hurting, it's awfully difficult to raise taxes on them.”
A small reason to rejoice! Of course he isn't against raising taxes, he just doesn't find it politically expedient to raise them at this time. Sigh. At least it is a start. Hopefully, it means we will see long overdue cuts in the state budget. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we will.
Gov. Steve Beshear's administration intends to try to shield some state programs from cuts, including Medicaid, public schools, universities, community colleges and the teacher retirement system.
Why the hell is education going to be shielded from cuts? Do people honestly believe that more money equals a better education. We have been throwing money at education for years with little effect. At what point do we stop flushing money down the education toilet?

Education is not about how much money we throw at it. Education is about teaching kids. Learning does not occur because money has been spent. Learning occurs when the student gain a craving for knowledge. They have to be motivated to learn. Money won't provide motivation. Creative teachers with the help of parents will get students motivated about their education.

I can already hear the whining. If we cut the budget for education then teachers and schools will suffer.  Are you serious? If we cut the education budget by say 5 percent do you really think it is the teachers and schools who will suffer? No, the ones who will suffer by an reduction in educational spending are the bureaucrats. The pencil pushing administrators that make up a large part of the state's education department. Those are the ones who will feel the brunt of the cuts.

The reason Beshear is trying to shield them is because they are a core constituency of the Democratic party. They give money to Democrats. They work to get the Democrats elected. They help fuel the Democratic party. That is why they are going to be protected by this governor. He won't tell us that. He will wrap the protection in sob stories about teachers and school facilities. But the result is the same. Protection for the Democratic special interest group.

Back From Leave Of Absense

I have been away from blogging the last few weeks because... well life sometimes just gets in the way. Hopefully, I can get back into the swing of things and start posting regularly.
