Conway and Mongiardo Are Screwed

Conway and Mongiardo are have a spirited campaign for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. At this point it looks like the are squabbling over the opportunity to get a beat down from the Republican nominee. How can I be so confident? Because the national Democratic party is doing everything they can to destroy their chances.

First they pushed the horribly unpopular Obamacare bill that Kentuckians reviled. A bill that only hemoraged because Republicans picked up the 41st senate seat in Massachusetts. On top of that, they continue to spend like there is no tomorrow. Proposing an eye popping $3.8 trillion dollar budget that would create over a trillion dollar deficit. An amount of reckless spending never before seen in America. One that leaves a very bad taste in voters mouths.

If that wasn't bad enough, now the Obama administration is targeting Kentucky's top energy source, coal.

President Barack Obama’s fiscal 2011 budget would cut roughly $2.3 billion in coal subsidies over the next decade, a move Kentucky lawmakers worry will mean heavy job losses in economically poor but coal-rich regions of Appalachia.

“Coal subsidies are costly to the American taxpayer and do little to incentivize production or reduce energy prices,” said a White House Office of Management and Budget analysis released Monday.

Nothing quite like declaring war on Kentucky jobs during a recession to help your fellow Democrats get elected! The Republican nominee is going to easily tie either Conway or Mongiardo to the Obama/Reid/Pelosi machine and their unpopular politics. Being tied to unpopular policies is not a way to gain 50 percent of the vote on election day.

The only option left for either of them is to denounce the leaders of their own party. While such a move might deflect some of the criticism, it will not exactly excite or motivate their Democratic base. Meanwhile the conservative Republican base is going to be uber-motivated to vote this fall showing up in droves leaving the Democratic nominee between a rock and a hard place. Essentially, the Democratic nominee is screwed.
