Base I - Review
This week begins Base II phase of training. Before talking about Base II, it is time to step back and review the first base period. Let's look at my goals for Base I and break them down by goals.
Biking has been a bit of an enigma. I was only able to do three outside rides and all of them were early in the period. I only did two rides outside that were two hours and the best I could manage is a 27.9 km/h pace. The colder than average temperatures around here have kept me inside riding on the trainer. Since my experience on the trainer is limited, I have no real idea how my cycling is progressing. I won't really know until I can get out on the road more regularly. My progress on the bike is more of a question mark right now more than anything. Hopefully, I'll be able to get out more in the coming weeks and have a better feel for my progress.
Running in this first period has been a wonderful success. I was able to easily meet my goal by the second week of base. My final long run was 70 minutes keeping a 5:30 pace. My heart rate for the run fluctuated from 144 - 149 which means it was coupled to my pace. That is a good sign of running fitness. It appears that running is my strongest sport right now.
The only place I really did poorly was my diet. I lost almost no weight during the base phase. I started with a weight of 158.3 and finished with a 157.8. I was doing OK until my trip to Gatlinburg. I lost all sense of myself on the trip and ate way to much. I have got to do a better job of controlling myself in restaurants and social gatherings. If I don't, I will struggle to lose weight.
- 400 yard swim in 10 minutes
- 1 hour run staying under 5:35 per km pace
- 2 hours on the bike averaging 29km/h
- Reduce weight to 156
